Challenge
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex and dynamic network of structural proteins, glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, and bioactive factors that surrounds every cell in the body. It makes up a substantial proportion of human tissue and plays a central role not only in providing mechanical support but also in regulating cell behaviour during tissue development, repair, and regeneration. Despite its fundamental importance in biology and medicine, there is currently no truly off-the-shelf human ECM scaffold available. Existing alternatives, including xenogeneic products and decellularized tissues, suffer from variability and limited biological relevance, while synthetic hydrogels lack essential human biological cues.
