Challenge
An in-depth understanding of cell and organoid samples requires tracking proteins in live samples over short and long time periods. However, conventional fluorescence imaging is often limited by sample perturbation (photoxicity) or insensitivity to low-abundance proteins (autofluorescence). Researchers often attempt to circumvent these issues by over-expressing proteins or chemically “fixing” samples, but this can lead to non-physiological cell behavior and destruction of precious samples.
Technology
Bioluminescence imaging is an alternative and complementary technology that uses enzymes to produce light. Without the need for input light, there is no phototoxicity and much higher sensitivity due to absence of autofluorescence. This enables the detection and imaging of early-state responses, transient events, rare states, and longitudinal studies of precious live cell and organoid samples. Bionebula provides best-in-class instruments, software, consumables, and protocols for incorporating bioluminescence into workflows for academia and industry.

Development Status
The core imaging principles have been experimentally validated in the laboratory. We are currently designing and developing customer-facing instrumentation and optimizing protocols and workflows for different samples and experiments. We are also establishing a strategic partnership with Synthelis, a producer of new, state-of-the-art bioluminescence reagents.

2 patent applications pending on bioluminescence microscopy hardware: PCT/EP2024/063730 and EP25193203.
